Suzy and Sunsets

Melbourne City Apartment Hotel, Melbourne, 13 October 2025

A busy work week last week. In amongst too many meetings, I was interviewed for a podcast, did a Women in Research session with 200+ women attending, and was in a panel at a robotics/ space conference. Amongst all this, I was happy on Wednesday night to go to a great movie with Jane (The Roses), which I thoroughly recommend if you havent seen it.

The weekend began with a dinner at Prego with Marylene on Friday night, followed by a physically-busy day Saturday continuing to clean out the cubby after swimming and pilates. Unfortunately a short weekend as I had to head to Melbourne Sunday morning to arrive in time for dinner (a time difference between Perth and Melbourne of 3 hours).

I have had a very good day here in Melbourne today (Monday). First, I was here as I was roped into this new consortium called Mentally Healthy Work Australia, and we were in a workshop to decide on some research projects. Its one of those activities that I have been 'hanging in there', trying not to spend too much time on, as I didnt know if it would turn into anything good... Well it has! I will be a 'co-lead' on a $1.95M project. So it felt like a very worthy trip and I am very glad I did persist with the involvement...

Second, I caught up with Suzy. After the workshop finished, I dashed into meet her at Federation Square and we went to a design exhibition at the Ian Potter Gallery (interestingly, got the idea to attend from one of my guests on Women in Research - an expert in urban design who has a display in the exhibition). Suzy is studying urban planning so thought it would be a good fit. There were many cool ideas like human-made coral to help regenerate bleached reefs, furniture made from various waste materials (e.g., wool, coffee grounds), sustainable clothing, and all sorts of recyclable products like ear plugs.

After that we sat in the sun - yes, unbelievable for Melbourne! - and had a drink, followed by an excellent dinner in an Italian restaurant. Suzy is working early tomorrow so I wont see her in the morning but fantastic to spend the evening with her. She is doing well!

Look closely at this cross walk - its female! One of the design concepts in the exhibition that has been applied in Melbourne

Walking to my hotel after seeing Suzy. Reminding me there are beautiful sunsets everywhere!
